How to go from navigating passion to choosing a career

There is no way to know what you’ll be doing forever. Of course, most people have a dream career but sometimes our dream career choice isn’t right for our personality. According to a Gallup poll, 30-57 percent of college freshman change their major at least twice before graduation. The same goes for people and their first job. Millennials now have an average tenure of 1-3 years at their first place of employment. Is this a lack of direction or passion? Only we can decide what we are lacking. Ultimately it’s not a bad thing to job hop even if you went to college or university seeking a specialty. The ‘F’ in life stands for flexibility and that includes our interests as we evolve into fully formed people. Use college as a tool to explore your options. Talk to an advisor and take courses that ignite your passions. It is important to have a major chosen but don’t beat yourself up if you can not decide on a career right away. If you’ve determined secondary education …

Why you should forgive yourself for past mistakes

Dwelling in the past requires an insurmountable amount of energy that only leads to repeat occurrences. What you think about the most will become a reality. Our thoughts drive our actions. Dwelling on your past can keep you from making any kind of progress. No matter what stage you are at in life, you can still have a successful future. If you are constantly replaying past events looking for new ways to solve them then you’re missing out on opportunities. An opportunity presents itself daily. And not in the form of a fairy godmother granting wishes just you and the willpower to live your life on your terms. Bottom line: You have the power to achieve, create, and become the vision you have for your life, self and career.  Everything is on the table. No dream is off limits.  Stop being a victim of your high expectations and the events that you can never change. Not because you’re not awesome but because there is no going back. Heartbreak, disappointment, and failures can leave us all …

How to stay ahead while unemployed

Here are three tips to help you keep your life on track while unemployed: Tip #1) Write out your plan for recovery. If your goal is to become a chef, you should write all the steps necessary to complete it. For example: Step 1: Go to culinary school. Step 2: Upon graduation get employment as a sous chef. Writing the action steps down on paper makes your dream more tangible and creates a clear path for you to follow. Each time you have completed a step mark it out. This physical cue if marking out a step will make you feel closer to your goals. By doing this you can reward yourself and see that you are still making progress towards your dream even when life has made it seem impossible. Tip #2) Don’t let your pride get in the way. Reaching out for help will not make you weak or your friends and family feel that you’re no longer dependable. If someone close to you chooses to not be there for you, don’t be angry. …

Success Recipe Ingredient #2: Confidence

Now that you have your first ingredient, friendships (clink link below to read about ingredient #1), and have built your support system, it is important that you support yourself as well. Low self-esteem and self-doubt will not serve you.  You’re going to have plenty of people telling you that because of who you are or where you come from your dreams are not possible.  Even people who you love and who love you dearly will tell you, you will never make your dreams come true. My parents are constantly beating me down about my career choice in the field of psychology.  I am currently experiencing financial setbacks and because all they see is problems they have grown to doubt me on my path to become a counselor. I could let them get to me and give up.  I could settle for less and start a career that has nothing to do with my goals for financial gain, but if I did that I would be accepting what they say as truth and giving up on myself. You have …
