Choosing a career is a big decision. It is something you will be doing everyday for the rest of your life. The pressure to pick the right one can make it hard for you to even decide. Unfortunately many people never do because they are over-thinking. I found the right career for me through trial and error. Not everyone gets it right the first time. Visualizing yourself choosing a career is a start, but there has to be action taken if you want to make a decision.
Clarity comes from engagement not thought. The more you think about something, the less likely you are to do it. It took me a year to actually start my blog because I was afraid of putting my self out there. I was over-thinking all of the “what-ifs.” I was freaking out over everything that could go wrong.
Once I realized that I was on the over-thinking ‘loop’ I took action fast to keep moving towards my goal of building a blog.
Over thinking happens for two reasons:
#1 You feel like you don’t have enough resources or money.
#2 You fear the idea of failure and therefore are taking things too seriously. This makes your goals feel too big and will scare you away from ever getting a start.
How to move past over-thinking:
Action is what helps to bring ideas to life. I used to want to be an optometrist, however once I started taking the courses I realized that that would not be the best fit as a career for me.
#2 Remenber success is a process.
#3 Take some time and research your desired career choice.
Actually dive in and learn more about what it is you would really like to be doing. Use the resources that you have and don’t worry about the ones you don’t.
Locate a professional in the same field. Contact their office or their business number and ask if they would have a few minutes to spend with you to discuss how to get started in that field and there career.
Do not be hesitant. Of course there will be roadblocks and people that are too busy but I guarantee you will find someone who can give you the knowledge you need to make an informed decision.
These are just a few suggestions on actions you can take. Thinking about things this way removes the “shoulds” and “need tos” that take your personal power away and make you feel like you aren’t in control. When you think that you choose to do whatever you do then you regain the control and power. And it becomes easier to take action.
